Weld Mold® 888

The unique chemical analysis of 888 will respond to almost all tool steel heat treatments and retain its endowed superior mechanical properties without cracking. Weld deposits are dense, porous-free, smooth, crack desensitized, resistant to corrosion and heat scaling up to 1200ºF.

Applications

Weld Mold 888 is for joining both heat treatable and non-heat treatable steels. Subsequent heat treatment procedure of cracked and fractured tools, dies, fixtures, and other parts will be dependent on the base material. The low coefficient of friction of 888 makes it ideal for buildup and surfacing on shafts, bearing surfaces, and valves. Ideally suited for high temperature applications such as steam turbine buckets, blades and covers.

Procedure

Prepare unit by removing all foreign material, fatigued metal, and any sharp radii. Bevel heavy sections to be joined. To obtain optimal results on high alloy tool steels it is advisable to preheat according to the base metal. Generally, on other applications preheating is not necessary. Peening will help relieve stresses and is advisable when welding on high alloy materials.
