Weld Mold® 5550
A highly specialized product designed specifically to resist thermal checking at high temperatures, even when a coolant spray is used. Weld Mold 5550 deposits porous-free dense welds that resistant compressive loads and abrasion similar in nature to H12 tool steel
Applications
Weld Mold 5550 is for hot working dies, mandrels, punches, when heat checking is not permitted. Excellent for edger rolls, extrusion tools, pipe forming rolls, hot punches, mandrels, or wherever extended high temperature resistance is necessary.
Procedure
Prepare all surfaces for welding by removing all foreign substance such as dirt, scale, grease, heat checks, rust, etc. Preheat according to that required by the base metal. Preheat Die blocks at 800°F. Preheat D2 air hardening and high speed tool steel to 900°F – 1100°F. Weld with stringer beads, peen welds while forgeable. Cool in still air after welding. Temper at 1000°F to 1100°F for one hour per inch of thickness.
