Weld Mold® 706
Applications
Weld Mold 706 is preferred for welding thin sections of cast iron where high dilution occurs and maximum machinability is required as encountered on shy castings and machining errors. Weld Mold 706 is excellent for building up on large castings, joining of cast to low carbon steel, and underlays for harder alloys. Deposits can be filed, drilled and tapped.
Procedure
Remove all defects and surface contaminants. A “U” type groove is to eliminate cracking in the root pass. Preheat casting to 500°F – 800°F, and maintain while welding. Use a 1/4" long arc with slow travel speed for buildups. Use two passes when possible with short beads, moving frequently to prevent welding heat build-up in one area. Peening is advised. Cool cast iron slowly for best results.
