Weld Mold® 938
Weld Mold 938 is an exceptional high alloy product for repair welding of high carbon and/or high chrome varieties of air hardening tool steels. Weld deposits are homogeneous, porosity-free and completely heat treatable.
Applications
For use on all D2 air hardening steel and for upgrading the A Series as well as a buildup overlay on the lower grades of steel. For cold working shears, blanking and forming dies, punches, slitter knives, trimmers, and other units that demand high performance. 938 is also used for composite fabrication on other types of lower alloy steel.
Procedure
Because of its crack sensitive nature elevated caution must be used when welding on D2 steels. If applying D2 filler material (938) on a D2 base material, the unit must first be fully annealed prior to welding and then rehardened after welding. When a complete anneal and subsequent heat treatment cannot be used, such as when the base metal is in-service in the fully hardened condition and cannot be taken out of service for the repair, the unit can be welded in the hardened condition with Weld Mold 958 or 966. Preheat should be at least 900º F – 1100º F For the A Series, and other steels preheat and post-heat accordingly.
