Weld Mold® 956
Weld Mold 956 is an enriched version of Weld Mold 954. This is a low carbon, chromium type hot work steel. Weld Mold 956 exhibits excellent machinability, toughness, and thermal shock and wear resistance.
Applications
Primarily used as an overlay on die casting dies and other hot working units subject to thermal shock. Not recommended for use in working areas of aluminum die casting dies. Build up on hardened tool steels, machine parts and other units where a medium hardness is required without subsequent heat treatment. Used for repairing broken teeth on automobile transmission gears in the as welded condition.
Procedure
For repair applications grind out or scarf defective areas from part to be welded. Be sure to remove all oxides and other foreign matter from area before welding. For full impression welds on die blocks preheat to 900º F. Maintain temperature during welding. After welding cool unit in still air to 300º F. to obtain ultimate grain refinement. Temper at 1050º F. for one hour per inch of thickness at temperature.
